VW returns to the 'ring with TT RS-powered Golf

New five-cylinder Golf 24 ready to tackle the infamous Nürburgring 24-hour race

Volkswagen will return to the Nürburgring-Nordschleife 24-hour race this year with an all-new challenger – the aptly named Golf 24.

Fitted with Audi's cracking 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbocharged engine -- an engine Audi once said was the exclusive property of its TT RS -- Golf 24 delivers 324kW/540Nm via a six-speed transmission and permanent all-wheel drive.

Golf 24 has undergone initial testing at Portugal's Portimão circuit and in Vallelunga, Italy ahead of the June race which is widely regarded as one of the toughest events in the motorsport calendar.

Last time a Volkswagen Golf visited the 25km 'ring was in 2007 when a 220kW front-wheel drive hatch finished in eighth place outright.

"With the new Golf24 we are continuing our successful commitment at the Nürburgring 24-hour race," explains Volkswagen's motorsport director, Kris Nissen.

"The event enjoys huge popularity, is one of the true classics in motorsport and, due to its extreme distance and unique race track, also represents a very big technical challenge, with our spectacular Golf we want to provide an additional highlight in front of a large audience – right in time for the 35th anniversary of the GTI this year."

The Nürburgring 24 hour race takes place from June 23 to 26.
