Volkswagen has just received clearance from the Beijing government’s planning authority to begin working with the State-owned Jianghuai Automobile Group (JAC Motor), its Chinese joint-venture partner, to build electric cars (EVs) in China.
The joint-venture’s battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) will enter production later this year and will be sold initially in China, the world’s largest consumer of electrified cars with 507,000 sold last year.
The joint venture, which is slated to run for 25 years in a $US727 million program, is planned to produce more than 100,000 BEVs a year.
Volkswagen is relying on the Chinese market to soak up 400,000 BEVs and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) a year by 2020, with a target of 1.5 million BEVs and PHEVs five years after that.
The joint venture’s first production facility will be near JAC Motors' headquarters outside Hefei, the capital of the eastern Chinese province of Anhui.
