Volkswagen has formally unveiled its GTI Roadster, Vision Gran Turismo at the Wörthersee festival in Austria.
Built from a pattern developed for the Sony PlayStation3 game, 'Gran Turismo 6', the two-seat show car features a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 driving through a 4MOTION all-wheel drive system to 20-inch alloy wheels, as we have previously reported.
"When Sony asked us if we would develop a Vision GTI vehicle exclusively for the game to mark the 15th anniversary of Gran Turismo we didn't hesitate for a moment," Volkswagen's Head of Design, Klaus Bischoff was quoted saying in a press release.
Volkswagen ran a competition among its design staff for a proposal that would meet Sony's needs. Judges were Bischoff himself and Kazunori Yamauchi, Director of Polyphony Digital and Vice-President of Sony Computer Entertainment. Yamauchi, who owns a number of cars, including a Golf GTI, is also the inventor of 'Gran Turismo'. Two designs made it through to the final selection process, and a 'task force' of three designers then produced the final result, taking the best features of both entries. One designer, Guillermo Mignot, handled the interior look, while Malte Hammerbeck and Domen Rucigaj were responsible for the car's exterior.
The virtual reality version of the car was revealed to the world as recently as May 26, and the actual car has been rolled out since, at the annual Volkswagen GTI festival in Austria.
