Chinese car-maker BYD has unveiled revolutionary new suspension technology that enables the battery-electric 2023 YangWang U9 supercar to drive safely with only three wheels bolted on.
The same electromechanical DiSus Intelligent Body Control can also enable the 745kW YangWang U9 to ‘dance’ or hop with all four wheels off the ground, if programmed, demonstrating unprecedented levels of agility from a low-riding supercar.
The DiSus tech is claimed to combine air springs that can vary the ride height by up to 150mm, along with dampers that feature a 200mm range of motion that can increase stiffness in an instant by up to 200 per cent.
Capable of matching the 1955 Citroen DS’s ability of driving along the road with only three wheels, the new tech uses cameras and Lidar to scan the road ahead to pre-arm the suspension.

If it detects a hazardous object, the system is designed to bunny hop over the obstacle to limit damage – pretty impressive when you consider the BYD-owned YangWang brand’s first supercar is capable of a 0-100km/h sprint in 2.0 seconds.
The same tech will help with full-throttle acceleration, extreme cornering and emergency braking.
Similar tech was shown off by premium sound system tech company Bose more than 15 years ago, but that system never reached production.
BYD’s DiSus, on the other hand, will be introduced on a variety of models.
These are expected to include the YangWang U8 SUV that’s claimed to be capable of travelling at speeds of up to 120km/h with a deflated tyre.
According to BYD, the DiSus tech has already undergone more than 30 months of durability testing over 10 million kilometres.
Once launched, the car-maker says the suspension will continue to evolve via over-the-air updates that will improve how the system reacts.
There’s no indication if the YangWang luxury brand will head Down Under, but Geely is already making its presence felt with the BYD Atto 3 and has bold expansion plans.
