WATCH: Electric BMW iNEXT driven flat out

Production version of Tesla Model X rival spotted doing final shakedown tests at the Nurburgring

BMW's next-generation pure-electric SUV, the BMW iNEXT, has been caught testing at the Nurburgring ahead of its official unveiling online on November 11.

To be launched globally in early 2021, the BMW iNEXT is set to do battle with the Tesla Model X, Jaguar I-PACE and the Mercedes-Benz EQC SUV.

It's believed the battery-powered BMW SUV was at the Nurburgring for durability testing as a lap around the 20.8km-long Nordschleife, with its 73 corners and striking undulations, put both the brakes and suspension systems under considerable stress.

BMW engineers will also be keen to ensure the batteries don't suffer thermal degradation from excessive flat-out acceleration runs.

Full technical details have yet to be revealed, but it’s already known that it will be based on the car-maker’s next-generation platform architecture that can underpin EVs, hybrids and traditional petrol and diesel powertrains.

It’s understood that flagship iNEXT models will come with a powerful 120kWh battery that should provide a range of up to 700km between top-ups.

The iNEXT will also be offered with Level 3 autonomous driving capability when launched, allowing for hands-off and eyes-off driving at up to 130km/h on the highway.

Later on, during the iNEXT’s lifetime, this will be upgraded to full Level 5 autonomous driving capability without the need for any input from the driver.

Stay tuned, as more details of the iNEXT will be revealed with its official unveiling on November 11.
