WATCH: Hyundai Kona N flat-out at the Nurburgring

Pint-sized 200kW-plus SUV shown frolicking at the ‘Ring ahead of mid-2021 launch

Just days after the Hyundai i20 N broke cover, the upcoming Hyundai Kona N SUV has been caught testing at the Nurburgring ahead of its launch next year.

The new footage, recorded by Youtuber Auto Motive Mike, is said to have been shot at an industry proving day at the German circuit.

Created as Korea’s answer to the Volkswagen T-Roc R, the headline news is that when the Hyundai Kona N arrives in the middle of 2021 it will be powered by the Hyundai i30 N’s 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that should, at the very least, match the hot hatchback’s 202kW and 378Nm torque peak.

There are some suggestions the small SUV will come with even more power but, whatever the final number, the Kona N is set to become the fastest-ever N car to date thanks to the combination of its dual-clutch eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.

With a new launch control feature on board, expect 0-100km/h acceleration to be completed in around 5.0 seconds – a big fall from the 6.1sec sprint for the hatch.

In the new video it’s clear the Kona N will get far sportier styling then the regular small SUV that includes larger alloy rims needed to package the large performance brakes.

Finally, dual-exit exhaust pipes should ensure the N version stands out from its lesser Kona siblings.

In the short video, the little Hyundai shows impressive pace and high levels of grip.

As well as the little Kona N, Hyundai’s performance division is also readying both a Hyundai Elantra N – to be sold in Australia as the i30 N sedan – and Hyundai Tucson N that could pump out as much as 255kW.
