WATCH: Jeep Wagoneer S beats Tesla Model Y Performance on track

Jeep puts its new high-performance SUV on track with Tesla rival for promo ahead of May 30 debut

After multiple teasers and an embarrassing leak, the inbound 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S has been shown off taking part in a track battle with the Tesla Model Y Performance ahead of the fast EV’s debut on May 30.

In the latest short film, the US car-maker reaffirms that the new Jeep Wagoneer S will produce 447kW and 836Nm of torque from its all-electric powertrain – enough to launch from 0-60mph (0-97km/h) in just 3.4 seconds, although that figure includes subtracting the US-style 1ft rollout.

As you’d expect from a Jeep promo, the Wagoneer S beats the Tesla Model Y Performance in virtually all aspects of the drive experience, including acceleration and handling.

During the vid, Jeep also once again declares its Wagoneer S will have a driving range of more than 300 miles (483km).

In the video, we see just how faithful Jeep designers have been to their original 2022 concept – the production-spec Wagoneer S gets smooth side surfaces, flush glass, larger squared-off wheel-arches and rakish rear lines.

Up front, there’s a new illuminated seven-slot grille that is said to be optimised to reduce drag and boost range.

Inside, there’s a fully digital instrument cluster, widescreen infotainment touch-screen and Ferrari-style passenger display. A lower touch-screen operates the climate control and seating, minimising buttons throughout.

Earlier teasers have revealed a huge panoramic roof, ambient lighting system, 19-speaker McIntosh sound system and single rotary selector for Jeep’s Selec-Terrain system, which boasts Sand, Snow, Eco, Auto and Sport modes.

The first vehicle to ride on parent Stellantis’ state-of-the-art STLA Large platform, the Jeep Wagoneer S will soon be joined by the more rugged all-electric Defender-rivalling Jeep Recon – and both have been confirmed for the Australian market.
