We rank top road trip snacks ahead of your next adventure

The only thing to top a good road trip is a road trip with amazing snacks. But how do you decide how what snacks to pack?

I don’t know about you, but food is one of my favourite things, so when it comes to road trips, it’s an opportunity to stock up on snacks you might not usually eat. TREAT YOURSELF.

Having lived a 4.5-hour drive from my hometown for nearly a decade now, the times I do drive back, my Nana always puts together a road trip lunchbox for the return trip, so we will be taking inspo from Nana Jean as we rank the snacks in God Tier, Top Tier, Mid-Tier, and Lower Tier.

God Tier

car trip snacks 01

Pringles – firstly TASTY AF. Secondly, already come in an easy travel container to eat out of that conveniently fits in a cup holder. It’s true what they say that once you pop you can’t stop. And this is true for opening a pack of Pringles on a road trip.

Shapes – okay, hear me out. Anything in a box is WAY easier to eat on a road trip. But Shapes are a good option because 1. A variety of flavours to choose from, and 2. Won’t leave you sitting in crumbs for hours on end.

Pocky – again, these Japanese biscuit sticks are so yum, but also the deliciously sweet-but-not-too-sweet coatings make it a perfect sweet treat for the journey.

Top Tier

Lollies/candies/chocolate – Not only do you have so many options to choose from (think snacks, sour lollies, party packs, chocolate bars, hard candies etc etc), but they will help give you a little sugar kick when you feel like you need it! Who doesn’t love a little treat?

Popcorn – Another easy to eat, tasty option for every road trip. Long gone are the days of plain, salted/buttered popcorn too, although that’s still available if that’s your jam.

Fruit – Kinda feeling like this one should be Top Tier purely for the ~health benefits~, however fresh berries, or fruit slices are brilliant for a road trip, and will make you feel 100% better about all your life choices.

Mid-Tier

necessary car snacks

Chips – Obviously everything else that isn’t a Pringle and only makes the Mid-tier because sometimes there’s nothing more annoying than having to sit in crumbs from a packet of Smith’s salt and vinegar chips or deal with the Cheetos dust that’s all over you and your car seat.

Protein/muesli bars - Another healthy-ish option however good for when you want to feel full until your next café stop along the way.

Lower Tier

hard boiled egg food snack ranking 01

Hard boiled eggs – Look, I quite love a hard-boiled egg as a snack, I think it’s great. But no dice on a road trip. Nana has packed this multiple times, and while she’s de-shelled and salted, and wrapped it in cling wrap, it’s not the best road trip food of all time.

Cold cut meats and cheese – Again, love a Charcuterie board, but a road trip is not the time or the place. What’s more tasty than sweaty cold cuts and cheese? Literally anything else at this point. Save it for when you reach your destination.
