Whacky Nissan debuts at Tokyo

Tokyo Motor Show is the traditional springboard for some of the whackiest concept cars to roll on three, four, and in some cases many more wheels! This year's Nissan's kicked off the weirdness and there's nothing to suggest it won't be joined by the r

Nissan has kicked off the traditional Tokyo Motor Show whackiness with the Pivo -- an electric concept car with, says the company: "unique revolving cabin, compact packaging, multiple drive-by-wire systems and excellent visibility."

The Pivo concept car examines the potential of future electric vehicles, says Nissan. It's most most distinctive feature is its cabin which revolves 360 degrees, eliminating the need to reverse.

Nissan says the Pivo's compact body also makes the car exceptionally easy to maneuver. Visibility is enhanced by Nissan's Around View technology, which helps reduce dangerous blind spots. The navigation and audio systems use an infra-red commander to make them simple to operate while driving.

Pivo seats three passengers despite an overall length of just 2700mm -- a Nissan Pulsar hatch is 4200mm long! The driver sits front and centre while two passengers sit side-by-side in the rear. Tall, electrically-powered sliding doors make access easy.

To reverse you pivot the entire cabin – hence the concept's name. Controls use drive-by-wire technologies including steer-by-wire, brake-by-wire and shift-by-wire systems. These replace mechanical linkages with electronic signals.

Pivo is powered by a Nissan-developed high-performance Compact Lithium-ion Battery and Nissan's unique Super Motor. No performace figures have been published by the manufacturer.
