What are the benefits offered by Nissan e-POWER?

Impressive range¹, easy refuelling, sublime refinement – e-POWER elevates your driving experience

There are many benefits to Nissan e-POWER, from its impressive driving range¹ to easy refuelling and so much more, which combine with sophisticated technologies and myriad driver comfort and convenience features to deliver a sublime driving experience.

For starters, the Nissan X-TRAIL e-POWER and QASHQAI e-POWER drive like a full EV, with electric motors driving the wheels while a petrol engine acts as an on-board power station to regenerate the battery pack.

This results in an ultra-smooth and refined driving experience. Electric motors (there are two in the Nissan X-TRAIL e-POWER, and one in the Nissan QASHQAI e-POWER) do not require a conventional gearbox and produce maximum power from the moment you step on the accelerator, so there is no need to ‘rev them out’ while driving away from a standstill, overtaking vehicles, or climbing steep hills, and no hesitations or interruptions in the power delivery by having to change gears.

Instead, Nissan e-POWER seamlessly delivers near-instant acceleration and effortless performance, and it does this all quietly compared to a traditional dedicated petrol-driven vehicle.

e-POWER is quiet because Nissan has gone a step further in adding to the serenity of driving the X-TRAIL e-POWER with the inclusion of Active Noise Cancelling technology, which eliminates other unwanted sounds from entering the cockpit, such as the rumble from the road and the wind whistling past the car at highway speeds.

The most notable benefit of Nissan e-POWER though is its ability to be refuelled just like a standard vehicle with an internal combustion engine. This means there is no hunting for an available charger as you might with a dedicated electric car, and no potentially lengthy recharging times. Simply refuel your Nissan X-TRAIL e-POWER or Nissan QASHQAI e-POWER with petrol at any service station; you'll be back on the road in minutes.

That’s because there is no need to plug in with e-POWER, as the lean-burning 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine only produces power to recharge the battery pack.

This brings with it a raft of conveniences compared to a fully electric vehicle: owners don’t have to change their driving habits; there is no additional costs by having to install home-charging infrastructure; and there is no need to search for the closest charging station. The latter could spell a costly detour on your route or, worse, present you with chargers that are fully occupied, forcing you to wait even longer.

More than that, Nissan e-POWER eliminates the biggest psychological barrier for electric cars: range anxiety. The petrol engine is activated only when the battery needs more energy and, even then, operates at low engine speeds. This means there is no drag or significant loads applied to the engine, which in turn makes it run more efficiently.

Consequently, the Nissan X-TRAIL e-POWER can travel up to 900km¹ on a single tank and the QASHQAI e-POWER up to 1000km¹ – generous distances that lend themselves well to a nation as large as Australia.

Both models’ power generation is further enhanced through regenerative braking, unlocked through Nissan’s e-Pedal Step². A feature in both the X-TRAIL e-POWER and QASHQAI e-POWER, deceleration effectively sees the electric motors (X-TRAIL e-POWER) or motor (QASHQAI e-POWER) work in reverse, generating additional charge for the vehicle’s battery.

This effectively ‘tops up’ the vehicle’s battery in addition to the main source of charge, the internal combustion engine, while reducing wear and tear on mechanical braking components.
