Why matcha might be your next morning commute beverage of choice over coffee

Sarah Davidson has matcha say ‘bout health and wellbeing.

The lawyer-turned-entrepreneur is co-founder of green tea empire Matcha Maiden and plant-based café Matcha Mylkbar and host of Seize the Yay podcast. Sarah Davidson  chats to carsales about the benefits of matcha and why the growing going-green communi-tea make it their morning go-to.

Why so matcha fuss?

Because, it’s so good for you! Matcha is pure green tea leaves that have been ground into powder form.

“It’s different to regular green tea where the leaves are dried into bag then you brew the water and then drink that brew, throwing out the leaves. But what about eat your greens!” says Davidson.

“Matcha is the same leaf, grown for a bit longer, which increases the chlorophyll and gives it that intense green colour.”

With matcha you’re drinking the whole leaf – yep, all the greens! As a result matcha is also more potent, delivering 137 times the antioxidants of green tea!

Matcha goodness

Davidson explains why matcha in the morning is better than… coffee.

“Matcha is packed with amino acids, L-theanine in particular. It’s slowly released into the bloody stream over a few hours so you don’t get that crash afterwards, like you can experience with a hit of coffee” says Davidson.  “Offering smoothed, sustained energy release for three to four hours, a morning matcha can see you through to lunchtime.”

Davidson and co-founder husband hope to see the green tea powder gain superfood status like many of its chlorophyll-rich allies have done before. Hello wheat grass, spirulina, we’re talking to you.

Nospresso?

You don’t have to give up coffee.

Davidson still dabbles in the dark side, sipping coffee on the odd occasion. “It’s the smell” that ultimately gets her.

“I think a realisation I had [while creating a wellness business] was that bright-line rules aren’t necessarily how health works.” tells Davidson who initially gave up coffee after a period of seriously poor health when she contracted a gut parasite on an overseas trip.  “It ended up that I was banned from coffee - it would send me into a complete panic attack and jitters.”

So matcha goodness

Davidson admits that she’ll give anything a “red hot crack” and reminds us how easy it is to get distracted by the glorification of being busy and that getting off the productivity hamster wheel and finding her ‘yay’ was a real turning point.

Packed with vitamins and minerals this dairy-free, sugar-free, vegan-friendly puff of powdery greatness has been shown to boost your immunity, enhance your metabolism and improve your energy and focus – what’s not to love?

If matcha lattes don’t unleash your yay, chuck some in a smoothie, add it to your post-work-out protein shake or soak it overnight with your oats. The possibili-teas are endless!
