Why the 2020 Pantone colour of the year is likely to be the colour of your next car

Pantone has released their colour of the year for 2020 and it turns out blue is also a favourite with new car buyers.

Crack open the sparkling, Pantone’s 2020 Colour of the Year is Classic Blue! For over 20 years, Pantone’s Colour of the Year has influenced product development and purchasing decisions across the fashion, home furnishings, industrial design world and even car colour selection.

According to Pantone this year's winner, Classic Blue or as it is technically known as, PANTONE 19-4052 brings a sense of peace and tranquillity to the human spirit, offering refuge. Aiding concentration and bringing laser like clarity, Classic Blue re-centers our thoughts. A reflective blue tone, Classic Blue fosters resilience. Wow, that’s soothing.

In celebration of the Classic Blue win, the blue oval company, Ford, has released sales data on the vehicle colours Aussies are choosing. It is no surprise to learn that the tranquil and peaceful colour blue is increasingly popular with new car buyers.

For Ford Australia, year-on-year, blue coloured vehicles saw their highest sales increase in 2019 ahead of the usual popular colour choices of white, grey and silver. While red coloured vehicles saw the highest decrease in sales from 2018-19, dropping from 5.4% to 4.5% of Ford models sold.

Queenslanders buy the most amount of blue Fords in the country with NSW and ACT residents following closely behind. This move to blue cars is also evident in the UK where blue is the number one vehicle colour for Ford customers.

So why this shift to blue over the traditional colour choices of silver, white and grey? According to Dave Dewitt, Exterior Design Manager at Ford, it is all about how we feel.

“At a time that seems so complicated and chaotic, it makes sense that Classic Blue will be a colour we see more of next year. For me, blue is the colour of communication and clarity and is also my favourite colour. Classic Blue is also quite a departure from the previous years’ colours, which were vibrant and had greater warmth.”

“Interestingly, we’ve seen blue cars increase in popularity more than any other colour this year. We have a number of vehicles that will be available in a similar tone to Classic Blue, and we would certainly expect to see a spike in numbers as the colour gets picked up in more products off the back of the colour of the year announcement.”

Previous Pantone colour of the year winners include Living Coral, Greenery, Tangerine Tango and Mimosa.
