If you’re after the wildest Ford Mustang this side of a GTD, then meet the 2026 Shelby Super Snake-R (SS-R), a supercharged, widebody, limited edition based on the Dark Horse.
And the good news is that unlike Ford’s wild track-focused ’Stang, you can actually park a Shelby SS-R in your driveway right here in Australia thanks to the firm’s local partner Mustang Motorsport.
“The 2026 Shelby Super Snake-R was optimised at every level to create a dominating track star,” Shelby American president Gary Patterson said.
The headline act is the supercharged 5.0-litre V8 that roars out 625kW, all of which is harnessed by the standard Dark Horse’s close-ratio six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmissions.
Giving the SS-R some hope of putting this power to the ground are gargantuan 335/35 rear tyres – with 305/30s up front – made possible by the swollen wheel arches that accommodate the necessary 20 x 13-inch rear and 20 x 11-inch front wheels.
Further mechanical modifications include a short-throw gearshift (for the manual), two-piece slotted brake rotors, fully adjustable coilover suspension with spherical bearings replacing rubber bushings, new front and rear anti-roll bars and uprated drive shafts.
Despite the additional gear and wider footprint, weight gain over the standard Dark Horse is kept to around 50kg courtesy of an aluminium bonnet and carbon fibre front guards, vents, brake ducts, front splitter, rear wing and diffuser.
Inside, the rear seats are deleted to allow for the fitment of a harness bar, and the seats are recovered in premium leather embroidered with the Shelby logo.
While the local price for a Shelby Super Snake-R is substantial at $250,000 on top of supplying the Dark Horse donor car, less than a handful will be available in Australia, guaranteeing exclusivity as well as mind-bending performance.
