Wild 1000hp Alfa Romeo Giulia EV coming

The Alfa Romeo Giulia will be reborn as a wild EV that will blend up to 1000hp (736kW) with an impressive 700km range, according to the Italian car-maker’s boss Jean-Philippe Imparato.

Speaking to Autocar, Imparato said the next Alfa Romeo Giulia due around 2025 will ditch combustion power altogether as part of bolder plans for the brand to offer only EVs from 2027.

Once launched, Imparato said that even the cheapest versions of the Giulia EV will produce a whopping 257kW while the mid-spec version, which could be badged Veloce, will come with 589kW.

Crucially, at the top of the tree, Alfa’s boss has confirmed the Giulia Quadrifoglio will live on but come with at least twice as much power as today’s 375kW model.

Ensuring not a single kilowatt is wasted in vain, the most powerful Giulia Q will come with all-wheel drive and is tipped to feature a development of the triple-motor powertrain used on the Maserati GranTurismo Folgore.

As well as epic power, the Giulia EV will offer a long driving range of more than 700km on models with the biggest battery – possibly a 100kWh unit, as seen recently on the Peugeot Inception coupe concept.

To keep the cost of development low, the new Giulia is expected to share its dedicated EV platform with the Peugeot 3008 SUV, but expect the Alfa to come with more advanced chassis technology.

An 800-volt electrical architecture will support ultra-fast charging, with a 10-80 per cent top-up taking just 18 minutes.

Justifying dropping combustion power for the next Giulia, Imparato said: “We switch because we must. If not, Alfa Romeo would be dead.

“We will switch in a real concrete substitution mode. I don’t want you [customers/owners] to suffer from anything [because of] the switch; I want you to love it.”

There’s no word on what shape the next Giulia will take, but the Alfa boss says the current design proposals were “very cool”.

The sedan is expected to shift to a four-door coupe design to rival the Porsche Taycan.

As well as the new Giulia, in 2024 Imparato revealed that Alfa Romeo will introduce its small Brennero SUV that has been confirmed to be offered either with a combustion engine or pure-electric power.

In 2024 another all-new model will be introduced that will either be a sedan or SUV.

Once the Giulia lands in 2025, the battery-electric replacement for the Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUV will be introduced in 2026.

Finally, in 2027 Alfa Romeo will launch a flagship sedan that will help spearhead the brand’s all-electric switch in markets like the US and China.
