Ford has released pictures of a wild new one-off factory-built Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 drag racer that is said to showcase the capabilities of its future high-performance electric powertrains.
The Blue Oval's factory electric race car is under development and the finished article will make its official debut at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas in November this year.
Like the seminal '68 Mustang 428 Cobra Jet from which it takes its name, the new Jet 1400 has been born for the drag strip, but instead of being powered by a 7.0-litre big-block V8, the flagship pony car comes equipped with an advanced pure-electric powertrain.
Ford has yet to release full details on the battery-powered Cobra Jet, other than to say its total outputs will surpass 1030kW and 1490Nm.
Developed in partnership with US-based MLe Racecars, Watson Engineering, AEM EV and Cascadia, the plug-in Cobra Jet will make its dynamic debut later this year at an undisclosed drag strip, where engineers claim it will complete the standard quarter-mile (402m) in just over eight seconds at around 275km/h.
Based on what's looks like a drag car chassis, the born-again Cobra Jet adds race-spec suspension, the obligatory full roll-cage, uprated brakes and a pair of Mickey Thompson competition rubber.
Look closer and you'll also see a Top Fuel dragster parachute and a wheelie-bar – two less than subtle hints at the level of performance that will be on tap here.
It's not known if Ford's all-new Mustang Mach-E SUV has donated any of its powertrain components for the Cobra Jet, which is claimed to have been built to show off the potential of the Blue Oval's EV technology.
Said to deliver "instant torque", the new one-off racer will "demonstrate the capabilities of an electric powertrain in one of the most demanding race environments", said Ford.
Speaking following its online reveal, project boss Dave Pericak said: "Electric powertrains give us a completely new kind of performance and the all-electric Cobra Jet 1400 is one example of pushing new technology to the absolute limit.
“We’re excited to showcase what’s possible in an exciting year when we also have the all-electric Mustang Mach-E joining the Mustang family.”
According to Ford, the new Cobra Jet is the first of many purpose-built electric race cars to come from the Ford Performance Motorsports division.
