Porsche has pulled the drapes off an EV supercar based on its Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 sports car that hints at its future all-electric Boxster and Cayman replacement.
The 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance is claimed to be a fully driveable dual-motor all-wheel drive prototype that will also provide the testbed for an upcoming one-make race series.
Following on from last year's Porsche Mission R concept, the 800kW racer has been initially limited to just 128km/h but will be uncorked at a later date.
When racing, Porsche will wind back the maximum power output to 735kW for qualifying mode, while only 450kW will be available during the race when the battery pack – details for which are still to be released – can provide constant power for 30 minutes.
Once the battery is depleted, Porsche's 900-volt architecture will enable a 5-80 per cent top-up in just 15 minutes, which is quick by road car standards but not really viable mid-race.
Despite looking heavily based on the 718 GT4 Clubsport racer, the new Porsche EV actually features more than 6000 new parts.
The body, for example, is all-new and made from natural fibre composites. That explains why it's also a hefty 140mm wider than normal.
The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance will make its public debut next month at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
There's no timetable for when the one-make racer will actually be ready to compete, but it's thought its timing might coincide with the launch of the next-gen battery-powered Porsche Boxster and Cayman due in 2025.
