Wild Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale revealed with V6 and EV power

Reborn supercar is a $5m tribute to original 33 Stradale and will help spearhead Alfa’s transition to EVs

The stunning 2024 Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale has been unveiled at an event in Italy, revealing a modern supercar inspired by the 1967 original of the same name.

Limited to just 33 cars, with a starting price rumoured to exceed €3 million ($A5.1m), Alfa Romeo has confirmed the entire allocation was snapped up following a secret VIP reveal at last year’s Monza GP.

Before they placed an order, buyers had to choose between either an Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale powered by a rear-drive 463kW twin-turbocharged V6 or an even more powerful all-electric triple-motor powertrain that pushes out more than 560kW.

As predicted, the modern Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale shares plenty with the latest Maserati MC20 supercar, including its full carbon-fibre monocoque and aluminium sub-frames.

The body itself is said to be a mix of carbon and aluminium, although there are extensive changes over the Maserati that include adding a pair of dramatic butterfly doors.

Instead of building it in-house, the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale will be assembled by Touring Superleggera, the famous Milan-based coachbuilder that specialises in building one-off and low-volume commissions.

With no large spoilers evident, the new Alfa 33 has to rely on its dramatic underfloor diffuser to generate downforce. There are also neat air intakes incorporated into the headlights that feed cool air to the radiator.

Further mirror support singlets and special surfacing over the rear deck all help keep the Alfa stable at high speeds.

As part of the design process, there’s one-piece front and rear body work that matches the original – a feature that back in the 1960s helped mechanics gain easy access to the related Tipo 33 racer’s mechanicals during races.

Under the rear bonnet is a mid-mounted twin-turbo 3.0-litre Nettuno engine that produces 463kW and is combined with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission that channels all its might to the rear wheels via an electronically controlled rear diff.

The 560kW electric version’s innards haven’t been previewed but should be combined with a battery that will provide for a range of more than 450km.

Alfa says both versions are capable of a 0-100km/h sprint of less than 3.0 seconds and a top speed of more than 333km/h.

Claimed to have been developed for both road and track, the 33 Stradale bags all-round double-wishbone suspension combined with active dampers and a front nose lift that can raise the snout by up to 50mm.

As standard there’s 20-inch rims that hide huge Brembo-developed carbon-ceramic brakes with six-piston callipers up front and four-piston grippers at the rear.

To ensure the supercar is useable on-road, the dampers have three settings – soft, medium and firm for track use. A launch control function is also available in Track mode.

F1 driver Valtteri Bottas has helped hone the 33’s handling at Alfa Romeo’s Balocco test track.

Inside, there’s the choice of two interior options – the Tributo and Alfa Corse that swaps out the traditional leather and aluminium for Alcantara and carbon-fibre.

Both have wraparound seats inspired by the 1960s 33 Stradale that are six-way adjustable.

Other retro cues include the wraparound door glass and mechanical switchgear ahead of the gear lever.

As part of the ordering process, a team of engineers, designers and even historians have been tasked to help owners make their modern 33 Stradale reboot their own.

That said, any wild personalisation ideas have to be signed-off by the 33 Committee – a team of Alfa designers and execs drafted in to keep customer orders for the ultra-rare sold-out run of supercars as classy as possible.

One final perk of buying a 33 Stradale is owners will be able to select the last eight digits of their car’s VIN plate that can be engraved on a plaque on the transmission tunnel. Owners also have the choice of grilles, rear badging and air intakes.

Speaking of customers, it’s not yet known if any of the 33 run of Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale supercars are destined to head Down Under.
