Releasing a teasing profile of the car it hopes will bring it glory on the 19.93km hill climb, the Alpine design team has clearly gone to town when it comes to the A110’s aero, with the petite coupe now featuring an enormous dorsal fin and towering rear wing.

Remaining rear-drive for the 1440mm climb up the Rocky Mountains course to its 4305m summit, the A110 GT4 Evo will compete in the Time Attack 1 category.

Based on the French brand’s Alpine A110 Cup racer, the road-going version’s 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder is thought to produce more than 270kW, transmitting its might to the rear wheels via a competition-spec six-speed sequential transmission.

No further details have yet surfaced, but Alpine’s secret weapon this year could be the rally ace behind the wheel.

Astier is a Pikes Peak expert and has previously set the class record (9:23.721) in the Time Attack 1 category.

This year, the Alpine A110 will also line up alongside the battery-powered Ford SuperVan 4 that’s claimed to produce an incredible 1500kW from its four electric motors.

If successful, Alpine could be prompted to produce a commemorative version of its A110, although it’s unlikely to be found on Aussie roads as the sports car currently doesn’t meet side-impact safety regulations.
