A wild new Ford Mustang has been previewed by Ford CEO Jim Farley with the promise “the best is yet to come” – suggesting a flagship high-performance version is on its way.
Posted on Farley’s social media accounts, and also across other company outlets, a teaser image shows the Ford Mustang under drapes – believed to be the new seventh generation (S650) – with a large rear spoiler.
No details were released, other than that the mystery model will help the Blue Oval mark next year’s 60th anniversary celebrations of the iconic pony car.
Pundits have suggested the model could be the first of a new generation of Shelby sports cars – a reborn GT350 or GT500 – however the plot thickened when Ford’s media team posted the image with the ‘RTR Fun 03b’ filename, only to quickly change the name to ‘MustangTeaser’.
The latest-generation Ford Mustang RTR is already available for order in Australia in Spec 2 guise, while Spec 3 in the US adds a supercharger.
Whether this is the next big thing from RTR, a Shelby creation or something else entirely, the incoming model is likely to sit above the current flagship Mustang Dark Horse and carve out its own niche alongside the track-bred Mustang GTD.
Count on a high-revving V8, six-speed manual gearbox option, aggressive aero package, modified suspension, bigger brakes and weight-saving parts.
Inside, expect more of a stripped-out feel with the cabin dominated by a pair of lightweight bucket seats.
Stay tuned, as we expect plenty more teasers of this intriguing new Mustang ahead of its reveal later this year.
