Wild Hyundai NPX1 is an IONIQ 5 N on steroids

Harder-core version of the Hyundai’s ballistic IONIQ 5 N EV teased ahead of Tokyo Auto Salon debut

Hyundai’s N performance division is preparing to unveil an even more extreme version of its flagship 2024 Hyundai IONIQ 5 N at the Tokyo Auto Salon on January 12.

Dubbed the Hyundai NPX1, the harder-core EV was teased in a short YouTube video released overnight, which points to a broad range of aero upgrades over the standard IONIQ 5 N.

Full details are still under wraps, but the wild NPX1 looks set to feature a huge front splitter and oversized rear diffuser, lowered suspension, weight-saving carbon-fibre mirrors and uprated brakes and wheels.

There’s no word on whether the already muscular IONIQ 5 N’s 478kW/740Nm dual-motor powertrain will carry over unchanged, or if the NPX1 will up the ante in search of even quicker acceleration than the 3.4sec 0-100km/h sprint offered in its donor car.

With the extra wings, it’s unlikely the NPX1 will be able to crack the current version’s 260km/h top speed.

Instead, the NPX1 could be tailored for car enthusiasts who enjoy track days, with the new concept potentially drawing plenty of influence from the IONIQ 5 N eN1 Cup car.

As well as borrowing its aero from the apex-clipping racer, the NPX1 might also undergo a similar weight-loss program, although it’s highly unlikely it will match the 250kg saving the IONIQ 5 N eN1 Cup commands over the road car.

Stay tuned as more details of the extreme Hyundai NPX1 will be revealed soon.
