The all-new Peugeot 308 has officially been crowned the 2022 Women’s World Car of the Year (WWCOTY).
It’s not yet touched down in Australia, but the French brand’s Volkswagen Golf and Mazda3 rival is set to return to Peugeot showrooms later in 2022, after several delays pushed back the next-generation small car’s local launch, which was originally due early this year.
Taking the overall 2022 WWCOTY title, the Peugeot 308 was also named Best Urban Car, while the new Kia Sportage won the title of Best Family SUV, the pure electric BMW iX was voted Best Large SUV and the Ford Mustang Mach-E – which is yet to go on sale Down Under – was named Best Family Car.
The Audi e-tron GT was voted Best Performance Car, while the Jeep Wrangler 4xe took out Best 4x4.
Those winners were whittled down from 65 contenders, with 56 female motoring journalists from 40 countries – including our very own carsales Consumer Editor, Nadine Armstrong – tasked with testing and evaluating each model in order to choose the winners.
Today’s announcement coincides with International Women’s Day, which the panel describes as a very special date.
“This year’s voting was closer than ever,” said WWCOTY executive president Marta Garcia.
“The jurors had their work cut out for them because each of the candidates represented the best of their segment.”
Many of the journalists had high praise for the winner, describing the Peugeot 308 as “a reliable, predictable car, without being boring”.
“Peugeot has been able to seduce families with a well-thought-out proposition and a very striking image, but also to win over those looking for different powertrains: petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and an EV coming next year,” said Carla B Ribeiro from Portugal.
New Zealander Sandy Myhre, who established WWCOTY in 2009, said the 308 is an automobile that offers just about everything you could want in a car.
“It drives very well and it’s hard to believe there’s only a 1.2-litre engine under the bonnet of most versions,” she said.
Meanwhile, Rowan Peperkamp from the Netherlands said: “It steers directly and has a very short turning circle, which is ideal for the city. Peugeot has thought about the best driving position for the driver.”
