Four cars have been squeezed into the Top Three finalists for the World Car of the Year awards, announced at the Geneva motor show yesterday.
Thanks to a tie for third place in the voting amongst the jurors from around the world, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, the Subaru BRZ/Toyota 86 twins, the Porsche Boxster/Cayman and the new Volkswagen Golf have all gone through to the final round of judging.
The winner to be announced at the New York Motor Show later this month after voting rounds which cut the lesser lights from 44 different models down to 10 and now down to three. Err, four.
Almost 70 motoring journalists from around the world judge the cars and last year voted the Volkswagen Up! as the World Car of the Year.
The Porsches and the Subaru/Toyota also make appearances in the top three short list for the World Performance Car of the Year, marking the seventh time in eight years that a Porsche has made it this far. Porsche's 911 is the reigning World Performance Car of the Year. Finalist number three is Ferrari’s F12 Berlinetta.
The World Car Awards also cover the World Green Car and the World Car Design awards, with Renault’s Zoe, the Tesla Model S and the Volvo 60 Plug-In Hybrid making the short list for the first, and the Aston Martin Vanquish, the Jaguar F-Type and the Mazda6 reaching the finals of the latter.
