Famous for his flame-throwing scooter and the world's longest motorcycle, UK-based motorcycle fettler Colin Furze has focused his talents on a new project -- the world's fastest mobility scooter.
Most often used by the infirm and people with mobility issues, most mobility scooters are powered by small electric motors, but Furze dropped a two stroke 125cc engine pulled from a 1997 Honda CR125 into the sit-down four-wheeler.
Featuring five gears and a custom exhaust system, the 35hp (26kW) compact vehicle can pop wheel stands, and also has a new frame to contain the larger two-stroke engine.
But in order to be eligible for record-breaking status the mobility scooter's outward appearance cannot be changed. That means luxuries such as the arm-rests and front basket remain.
The result is indeed the world's fastest mobility scooter, breaking the previous world record of 100km/h (62mph) with a top speed of 115.21km/h (71.59mph). See the video below for his attempts at the Santa Pod raceway.
With those sorts of speeds, the mobility scooter could theoretically cruise highways and motorways, though questions of stability, and legality, would no doubt complicate the process.
"It's great to have set the record and have the speed clocked officially and fantastic to have gone over 70mph, I'm ecstatic," Furze told the UK newspaper The Telegraph. "The scooter was a bit twitchy when I was going at a high speed and it was quite uncontrollable but I managed not to crash."
