Car enthusiasts are salivating at the prospect of nearly $100 million worth of rare, collectable and desirable cars and motorcycles descending on Melbourne for the RACV Motorclassica in October.
Scheduled for display at the Royal Exhibition Building between 26 and 28 October, organisers have already confirmed an impressive list of 120 unique cars and 40 motorcycles for the Australian International Concours d'Elegance.
Now in its third year, the award-winning RACV Motorclassica is expected to attract more than 20,000 visitors to view the collection of rare vehicles, some of which will travel from as far afield as London. This year’s event will celebrate the centenary of the first Victorian Motor Show, also held at the iconic Royal Exhibition Building in 1912.
A special collection of 1912 cars will be on display to mark the occasion, including an 1898 Thompson Steam Car. Notable vehicles from other eras include American classics like the 1956 Chrysler 300B and 1969 Boss Mustang 429, while Australia’s own automotive heritage will be represented by cars such as a Holden FJ station wagon, one of only three known examples in the world.
An estimated $5m worth of world class cars will also feature in the Collector Car Auction, including a Lamborghini Miura S, custom made and painted ‘alien green’ for its original owner, the 1960s supermodel Lesley ‘Twiggy’ Lawson.
The Miura will feature alongside a 1935 Bentley 3.5 litre, owned by former Australian Governor-General Lord Casey, and an imposing 1907 Fiat Brevetti Landaulet, once in the possession of former American Grand Prix great, Phil Hill.
Motorsport enthusiasts will also be presented with the opportunity to view a rare display of Sir Jack Brabham’s race cars. The display includes the Australian motorsport legend’s first Midget Speedcar, his 1959 World Drivers’ Championship winning Cooper, and his famous 1966 Repco Brabham (pictured).
Sir Jack himself will attend the event over the weekend, where he’ll be joined by his chief collaborator Ron Tauranac, and former Brabham Formula One team driver, Tim Schenken.
Other event highlights include the Tour Classica, which will see the entire concourse drive from Albert Park Lake, through the city, to the Royal Exhibition Building; and Picnic with the Classics which will bring together up to 400 classic cars at Museum Plaza in a free family event.
“This is the most exciting RACV Motorclassica yet. The applications to be involved have been of a higher standard than we have ever witnessed before. It has been a tough decision deciding which cars to include but it means we have been able to pick the absolute cream of classic vehicles. Attendees are in for a real treat,” Event Director Paul Mathers said.
The RACV Motorclassica will be staged at Melbourne’s Royal Exhibition Building from Friday October 26 to Sunday October 28. Adult ticket prices are $30, RACV members $20, children (5-15 years) $20, families (2 adults & 2 children) $80.
