Imagine wandering the aisles of your local toy shop or supermarket only to find the very car you designed on the shelf for sale.
Well, now’s your chance, because this year Polestar is partnering with Hot Wheels for its annual car design competition, and the winner of the 2024 Polestar Design Contest will have their very own creation brought to life and sold in stores across the globe.
First launched back in 2020, this year’s design competition marks the first time the Swedish electric car maker has collaborated with Hot Wheels, with all entrants encouraged to ‘be as imaginative as possible’.
Open to the public, designers, and students, alike, the only requirement is that Mattel should be able to translate the final design into a 1:64 Hot Wheels die-cast vehicle.
Entrants are also required to include visuals of the vehicle’s interior design and immediate surroundings in their submission.
Shortlisted applicants selected by Polestar and Mattel, will then be coached by Polestar design professionals with one-on-one guidance to refine their design ahead of final selection where the winner is expected to be announced before the year’s end.
In 2023, Polestar combined winning designs from previous years, to come up with the 1:1 scale Polestar Synergy concept, an electric super-sports car that was brought to life over six months in a combined effort.
Shortly after the Synergy concept came to life it debuted at the Munich Motor Show before making its way over to California where the Polestar x Hot Wheels collaboration for 2024 was announced.
“Dreams have the power to inspire and transport us beyond what we thought possible,” said Polestar design boss, Maximilian Missoni.
“This is a chance for all participating designers to really push that Polestar envelope and let their imagination run riot.”
According to Polestar, the competition has ‘highlighted top talent around the world, with many students going on to work for the Polestar Design team or in the wider professional design industry’.
Entries for the 2024 Polestar Design Contest open on 5 March 2024, with the submission deadline set for 16 April 2024. The winner will be announced by Q4 2024.
