SsangYong Korando e-Motion EV teased

Battery-powered SUV set for release soon in Europe, despite Korean car-maker’s financial woes

SsangYong has released images of the production-ready pure-electric SsangYong Korando e-Motion ahead of its launch in Europe from August this year.

Set to be SsangYong's first pure-electric vehicle, the battery-powered 2021 SsangYong Korando e-Motion will be the first model launched since the Korean brand entered receivership in December 2020.

Developed to compete with the likes of the Hyundai Kona Electric and the MG ZS EV, the electric SsangYong is expected to be priced from around $40,000 if introduced to the Australian market.

A spokesperson from SsangYong has confirmed to carsales that "the e-Motion is under consideration for Australia".

Despite looking closely related to the current Korando, the e-Motion is believed to be almost entirely new as it's based on the Mahindra Electric Scalable and Modular Architecture (MEMSA) rather than the X100 platform that underpins the combustion-engined versions and the smaller SsangYong Tivoli.

Helping differentiate the e-Motion from the petrol and diesel Korando models, the EV's body has aero add-ons that include a blanked-off grille, restyled bumper, smoother wheels and extra subtle wind-cheating elements.

Powering the new SsangYong Korando e-Motion is a 142kW electric motor linked to a 61.5kWh lithium-ion battery that provides for a 418km range on the NEDC test cycle.

Despite its financial troubles, SsangYong has announced that it has already begun building the Korando e-Motion.

It has also just revealed a rugged J100 concept that's set to share its pure-electric powertrain with the Korando e-Motion when it goes on sale in 2022.
