American resto-mod company Zero Labs has beaten Ford to the punch with its all-new Bronco.
Unlike Ford’s factory-produced Bronco SUV – which isn’t due in showrooms until late in 2020 – the Zero Labs Bronco is all-electric and vegan-friendly.
Best yet it’s based on the 1966-67 model and built on an original chassis, giving it an instantly regonisable look enthusiast buyers won't scoff at.
Just 150 examples of the Zero Labs Bronco will be built, all featuring a 70kWh lithium-ion battery its maker claims will deliver up to 306km driving range.
The EV produces 275kW/375Nm from its Borg Warner brushless electric motor and is mated to a five-speed manual (yes, manual!) transmission and two-speed transfer case.
The body of the Zero Labs Bronco is constructed of aluminium and aerospace-grade carbon-fibre.
Four-link suspension is fitted front and rear while Brembo six-piston calipers take care of braking duties. Currie diffs are fitted front and rear while FOX adjustable coil-overs handle the lumpy stuff.
Zero Labs retained the donor Bronco’s badges and remanufactures its slat-style grille. All panel tolerances are no greater than 4mm.
The interior comprises walnut and bamboo panels to promote an eco-friendly theme.
Buyers can choose from hand-stitched leather or "vegan-friendly" upholstery, the cabin capped with all-digital displays that recall the Bronco's original gauge sets.
There’s no word on price, or charging times for the Bronco EV, but with five times the horsepower of the original it certainly sounds quick.
And if it’s not fast enough, Zero Labs says you can upgrade the battery packs, VCU hardware and software, and some of its control systems.
"Our premium classic electric vehicles are restored and handcrafted to show car quality seamlessly powered by a covert all-electric drive system," says Zero Labs press blurb.
"They are designed to be low maintenance, environment-friendly, at superior luxury and refinement. Our goal is to offer everything you love, minus everything you hate. To be enjoyed now and well into the future."
