Overview
Hyundai's Sonata family sedan followed the small Excel hatchbacks into Australia, arriving here in 1989. Starting with an 84kW 2.4-litre four-cylinder, it opened new markets for the Korean car-maker with its good packaging and tempting price. Today the Camry/Aurion-size Sonata still offers a 2.4-litre engine but power has grown to 118kW/219Nm ? and there's also a 3.3-litre V6, as well as a two-litre turbodiesel. Interior and boot space are exceptional, while road manners are pretty good too, with adequate punch and economy provided via manual or auto five-speed transmissions. Stability and traction control and six airbags are standard Sonata equipment.
