This is a very reluctant sale of one of Jaguar’s most underrated modern performance cars.
I have owned every petrol variant of the S-Type, including the rare 3.0-litre manual currently advertised on Carsales. In my view, the manual and the S-Type R are unquestionably the two models to own. Both received Jaguar’s CATS active suspension and feel substantially more sporting than the standard variants, but the R takes the formula to another level.
Its supercharged 4.2-litre V8 produces 298kW and 553Nm, driving the rear wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. With CATS active suspension, large R-spec brakes and genuine grand-touring comfort, the S-Type R combines serious performance with the ride quality and character of a proper Jaguar.
Among enthusiasts, Jaguar’s supercharged 4.2-litre AJ‑V8 is widely regarded as the sweet spot of the modern supercharged Jaguar era. It combines the performance and character expected of an R model with the mature engineering and relative simplicity of the later 4.2-litre AJ‑V8. Unlike the earlier 4.0, it benefited from Jaguar’s improvements to the cylinder liners, timing system, block and cooling arrangements, while avoiding some of the additional complexity of the later direct-injected 5.0. This car is listed at more than $10,000 less than any other 4.2L S V8 Jaguar on carsales.
Only 72 S-Type Rs were officially sold new in Australia, making good Australian-delivered examples genuinely difficult to find.
The odometer indicates approximately 297,335km; however, the engine was rebuilt less than 4,000km ago. The car feels extremely well sorted and maintained and drives beautifully—solid, tight and free of rattles or squeaks. It does not feel like a car that has travelled its indicated kilometres.
It also received new tyres aound 3,000km ago.
Cosmetically, it presents exceptionally well. The colour combination is particularly stunning in the flesh, the paintwork is excellent, as is the interior, with very few components showing any meaningful signs of age. It is a remarkably well-preserved and impressive-looking car for its year and mileage.
I purchased it two years ago and have thoroughly enjoyed owning it. I genuinely do not want to sell it, but I need to reduce the number of cars in my fleet. With luck, one of the others will sell first, because this is absolutely a keeper.
This is not being presented as a low-kilometre collector car. It is an honest, rare and unusually well-sorted S-Type R with its most important mechanical work recently completed. It should appeal to an enthusiast who understands that condition, maintenance and the way a car drives matter more than the number displayed on the odometer.
