Lantra became Elantra in 2000 after Lotus and Mitsubishi stopped bothering Hyundai about name similarities with Elan (Lotus) and Elante (Mitsubishi). The small Hyundai sedan today competes in the Holden Astra/Mitsubishi Lancer segment with the usual value-for-money argument a convincing vote-swinger. Safety equipment includes stability control, ABS and dual front airbags - front side and curtain airbags are standard on SLX and Elite, optional on SX. A spritely 105kW/186Nm two-litre engine, five-speed manual and four-speed auto transmissions allow the attractive Elantra to compete strongly in a vicious market segment.
