This car must be driven to be believed - it's such a nice car to drive - blindingly quick and super cheap to run. I've driven more than 50 EVs and this is one of my favourites. If you're new to EVs, I'm happy to answer any questions!
Worried about the higher km?
Don't. Remember - EVs don't' require oil changes, transmission maintenance, belts or chains, spark plugs, fuel pumps or exhaust systems. Electric motors are essentially maintenance free and are designed to go for many hundreds of thousands of km. That's why I would be comfortable buying a high km EV but not a petrol or diesel car - There are very things to wear out!
Tesla's battery and drivetrain warranty on this car runs 8 years / 192,000km with a guaranteed minimum 70% capacity retention — so there's plenty of warranty and battery life left.
I'm an experienced EV owner and have looked after the battery. It's only been charged to 100% a handful of times. I've also had the battery independently tested by AVILOO for peace of mind and it found no abnormalities and all system checks passed.
This dual motor all wheel drive version has 497hp and is no longer available new in Australia. Charge overnight or from your solar during the day and you never have to think about paying for 'fuel' again.
Other features
- 500+ km genuine range
- Cheap to run ($1.12 per 100km)
- Premium stereo (Awesome sound, significant upgrade over the base model -needs to be experienced!)
- Big boot 600+ litres
- Battery health independently tested by Aviloo
- Long battery and drivetrain warranty
It's the last model with ultrasonic parking sensors and indicator and gear-selector stalks - unlike newer models. It's also in Tesla's classiest colour and wheels combination - Midnight Silver Metallic and silver sport wheels.
CHEAP TO RUN
Averaging 13–14kWh/100km, which is about $1.12 per 100km on an 8c overnight EV tariff. For comparison, a petrol car doing 8L/100km costs roughly $14–16 per 100km — so you're driving for around a tenth of the cost.
WHY THE LONG RANGE OVER THE RWD?
I almost bought the cheaper RWD, but after test-driving the dual-motor I went with the Long Range and I'm glad I did:
- Dual-motor AWD — strong, smooth torque and excellent traction in the wet. 0–100km/h in 4.4 seconds, yet completely relaxed to drive in traffic.
- 602km WLTP range vs 494km for the RWD. This matter when going long distance and charging is faster as well. It still comfortably shows 500km+ at 100%.
- Premium audio — genuinely one of the best car sound systems at any price. Strong bass, clear and immersive.
- Fog lights — a minor extra, but excellent when you need them.
FEATURES
- Supercharger network access — plug in and it starts charging automatically.
- Super easy road tripping — Type in your destination and the car plans your charging stops for you.
- Autopilot — keeps the car centred in its lane and a set distance from the car ahead. Takes the strain out of highway driving.
- Matrix LED headlights — bright, high-quality light that adjusts the beam to maximise visibility without dazzling oncoming traffic.
- Over-the-air updates — the car is better now than the day I bought it, with regular updates adding features, safety and fun.
