2017 Ford Mondeo price and specifications released

Blue oval attempts to plug Falcon void with better equipped Mondeo

Ford Australia has released pricing and specifications for its 2017 Mondeo, the car tasked with filling the void left by the now-defunct Falcon.

With Ford no longer offering a traditional large sedan in the Australian market, the Mondeo takes on not only the bigger Holden Commodore but also mid sizers such as Toyota Camry, Mazda6, Subaru Liberty and Volkswagen Passat.

Minor visual upgrades headline Mondeo’s changes for 2017 and Ford is confident of the facelifted model’s potential across both hatchback and wagon body styles.

On the outside, the flagship Mondeo Titanium grade steps-up to 19-inch five-spoke alloy wheels with lower profile 235/40 Continental tyres, the mid-spec Trend moves to 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels and the entry-level Ambiente hatchback now matches the equivalent wagon model in running 17-inch alloys.

Mondeo also scores a new paint colour called ‘Meticulous’ silver.

Inside, Ford’s SYNC3 infotainment system carries over and includes an eight-inch colour touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and app-friendly software.

Under the bonnet is the familiar 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine in 149kW/345Nm or 177Nm/345Nm tunes, or a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel delivering 132kW/400Nm. Both are fitted with six-speed automatic transmissions - a dual-clutch unit for the turbo-diesel.

Prices are up by $500 for both Trend and Titanium models but there is no change for the Ambiente.

The 2017 Ford Mondeo range starts at $33,190 (plus on-road costs) and runs to $49,840 (plus on-road costs).

Ford Australia says Mondeo sales jumped by 47 per cent in 2016 (a total of 3122 units) and remains “crucial” to its lineup. But Mondeo sales lag behind the Toyota Camry, Mazda6 and Subaru Liberty.
