Mercedes-AMG has revealed price and specifications for its bustling pair of mid-size SUVs, the GLC 63 S and the GLC 63 S Coupe.
The conventionally-styled high-rider and its heavily raked offshoot will be available in local showrooms from the end of 2017, touted as the fastest SUVs available in the country - at least until the manic Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk lobs.
The GLC 63 S will be priced from $164,900 (plus on-road costs), while the coupe’s pricing has been set at $171,900 (plus on-road costs).
This represents a healthy $60,000 premium over the lesser-powered, AMG-fettled GLC43 and GLC43 coupe pairing already available in Australia.
First unveiled at the New York motor show, both 63 models are powered by AMG’s ubiquitous 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 offering 375kW at 55000rpm and 700Nm from 1750rpm. Performance technologies boasted by the hand-built engine include dry sump lubrication and placement of the two turbochargers inside the cylinder banks for optimal response.
The flagship GLC variants send drive to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission. An electronic limited-slip rear differential purportedly ensures maximum grip in accelerating out of corners.
Mercedes-AMG claims a nought to 100km/h time of 3.8 seconds in both models along with an electrically-governed top speed of 270km/h. That compares with 4.9 seconds for the GLC 43 and 3.6 seconds for the all-conquering Trackhawk.
The standard cars get adaptive air suspension, high-performance composite brakes comprising 390mm front discs and 360mm rear discs. The interior is headlined by Nappa leather and a ‘Dinamica’ performance steering wheel, AMG performance seats and an AMG-themed instrument cluster with a race timer.
Both models are available with a $4500 carbon exterior package comprising carbon fibre mirror housings and rear add-ons. Local stakeholders have also confirmed an Edition 1 package worth $10,900. It brings yellow sports stripes, 21-inch alloy wheels, an AMG aero package, carbon-ceramic brakes and unique interior elements.
