2018 Volvo XC40 pricing revealed

City SUV set to start from under $50,000

Volvo Cars Australia has confirmed its new XC40 SUV will be priced from $47,990 (plus on-road costs).

Due to reach showrooms from April, the XC40 range will comprise eight variants at launch spanning the Momentum and R-Design models, with the range set to expand later in 2019 to include a brand-new entry-level three-cylinder engine.

Initially, the XC40 will be available with a choice of two engines: a 185kW/350Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol known as T5, and a 140kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbo diesel referred to as D4.

Anchoring the line-up will be T5 Momentum, priced at $47,990. The diesel D5 Momentum adds a $3000 premium, at $50,990.

The higher-spec T5 R-Design starts at $54,990, while the D4 R-Design tops out the initial range at $57,990.

At present the entry-level Volvo XC40 Momentum models are fitted with keyless engine start, rear parking sensors and rear-view camera plus rear cross-traffic alert as standard.

A lane departure warning system and blind-spot monitoring are also standard, as is dual-zone climate control and a fully-digital 12.3-inch instrument panel borrowed from the XC90 and XC60 models.

The 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible is also standard, along with a wireless phone charging plate, power adjustable driver's seat with four-way lumbar adjust, auto-dimming mirrors, an eight-speaker stereo, 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic high-beam headlights and signature 'Thor's Hammer' LED daytime running lights.

The more expensive Volvo XC40 R-Design model gets all of the above and adds sportier exterior styling including a contrasting black roof, 20-inch alloy wheels, firmer sports suspension and a fancier interior fit out. Nappa leather seats are added, as is an R-Design steering wheel with paddle shifters, while the front passenger gets a power adjustable seat as well.

Keyless entry, a powered tailgate with kick-to-open gesture control, ambient interior lighting are also added to the R-Design model.

Semi-autonomous driving aids (Pilot Assist), Park Assist Pilot, a 360-degree parking camera system and high-end Harman Kardon audio system are optional.

Stakeholders have also announced four ‘Launch Edition’ models available in both T5 and D4 forms, however all 203 models were sold out in six days according to Volvo Australia.

The Momentum Launch Edition starts at $52,990 for the T5, and $55,990 for the D4. Each represents a $5000 increase in price - but for its part, Volvo says the package integrates about $10,000 worth of added equipment over the regular Momentum.

Standard gear on the Momentum Launch Edition includes a sunroof, LED headlights with cornering function, keyless entry, an electric tailgate, adaptive cruise control with Pilot Assist, a Harman Kardon audio system, 360-degree camera system, leather upholstery with heated front seats and 19-inch wheels.

Sitting atop of the XC40 hierarchy, the R-Design Launch Editions are priced at $56,740 (T5) and $59,740 (D4) respectively. That makes them $2000 more than the regular R-Design but with $6500 worth of equipment, according to Volvo.

Standard fare on these models, over and above the regular R-Design range, includes a sunroof, alarm, heated front seats, adaptive cruise control with Pilot Assist, Park Assist Pilot, a Harman Kardon audio system and 360-degree camera system.

The XC40 is the third SUV model in Volvo’s portfolio, joining the larger XC90 and XC60.

Its brings significant progress under the skin, debuting as the first new model based on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), a new platform jointly developed by Volvo and its Chinese owner, Geely.

Volvo’s Australian strategy positions the entry-level XC40 beneath BMW’s X2 on price, but about $6000 more expensive than the Audi Q2 – both key rivals.
