2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 pricing revealed

Mercedes' brute off-roader brings added power and poise

Mercedes-AMG has confirmed its new G63 will arrive in Australian showrooms from August, priced from $247,000 plus on-road costs.

Employing a new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 that now makes 430kW and 850Nm – up 10kW and 90Nm on its predecessor – the iconic off-roader moves in a slightly more gentrified direction than before, purportedly without losing its cult appeal.

The new model comes in about $12,000 more expensive than the one it replaces.

A new nine-speed automatic transmission does the leg work on the road, allowing the big behemoth to notch up 100km/h from rest in 4.5 seconds.

In addition, the gearbox utilises a new low-range function to ensure the G63 retains its off-road ability.

While the regular G-wagen harks from utilitarian roots, the G63 makes a few clear distinctions as the flagship of the line-up, riding on 21-inch wheels and employing the Panamericana grille familiar from other AMG performance models including the GT R.

Then there are the obligatory performance trinkets including red brake calipers, side-mounted exhaust pipes and a slew of AMG badges.

Inside, the G63 gets dual 12.3-inch screens already introduced with the E-Class and S-Class to lend the cabin a more sophisticated vibe than ever before. The screens work in concert with an extensive infotainment system that includes a 15-speaker Burmester sound system, a TV tuner and digital radio, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

To round things out, you get a selection of 64 different ambient interior lighting colours, a sunroof and electrically-adjustable heated seats dressed in Nappa leather.

The G63 also takes a significant step forward in terms of safety, offering adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, autonomous emergency braking and traffic sign recognition feature.

Predictably, there will be a G63 Edition 1 package introduced in the first wave of cars and priced at $19,500. It brings quilted Nappa leather seats complete with a massage function and ventilation, red carbon trim and unique badging.

There is also a $5900 Night Package that is incorporated into the Edition 1 vehicle. It brings tinted indicator lenses, 22-inch wheels and blacked exterior trimings.
