2020 Audi A4 revealed

Significant technology, styling and drivetrain updates for Audi’s mid-size family

Audi has revealed significant revisions to its popular A4 range that will take effect in Australian showrooms around May.

Keeping apace of updates to the rivaling Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the new BMW 3 Series, Audi’s revised mid-sizer features an upgraded design, new technology and the introduction of mild hybrid engine technology.

Visual changes are punctuated by new LED headlights across the range, a broader grille and revisited air intakes and bumper detailing. Front changes are matched by more muscular wheel arches and small bumper tweaks and new taillights at the rear.

Inside, Audi’s ageing MMI infotainment system is replaced by a new 10.1-inch infotainment screen that eschews the predecessor’s transmission tunnel-mounted rotary dial for a simpler touch display.

The updated MIB 3 platform offers better voice integration, according to Audi, and the system supports car-to-X communication currently being rolled out across Europe; technology that anticipates traffic light patterns as one example.

The updated centre screen is linked to Audi’s brilliant virtual cockpit display in the instrument cluster.

The A4 range will be available with six turbocharged engines in Europe, anchored by the four-cylinder petrol 35 TFSI and headlined by the 255kW/700NmV6 diesel S4 TDI.

Three of those six engines will be mated to mild hybrid technology designed to lower fuel use by 0.3L/100km. A similar 48-volt electrical system is already in use in the SQ7 performance SUV, offering linear power delivery via an electronically-powered compressor.

Audi isn’t releasing exact price and specification details in Australia just yet, except to say the updated A4 and A4 Allroad families will reach local showrooms around the second quarter of 2020.
