2020 Audi RS 5 Coupe and Sportback freshen up

Performance flagships of the Audi A5 range avoid middle-aged spread with quick nip and tuck but no more power

Audi Sport has updated the Audi RS 5 Coupe and RS 5 Sportback with styling and tech updates to keep it fresh for 2020.

Following in the tyre tracks of the recently refreshed Audi A5 and S5 range, the biggest tweak involves introducing a wider front single-frame grille and a pair of new darkened headlight bezels, plus the option of Matrix LED or Laser Light tech.

Look closer and Audi designers have also implemented the same slimline air intake below the leading edge of the bonnet as seen on the new A1 Sportback. Audi hopes it will trigger enthusiast's memories of the original 1984 'ur' quattro but we can't help be reminded of the cheapest Audi model with which it shares the same design element.

Elsewhere the styling changes involve 400mm wider wheel-arches, new side sills and a fresh rear diffuser insert, plus new colours and carbon-fibre styling packs.

Speaking of composites, the latest Audi RS 5 Coupe now comes with a BMW M4-aping full carbon-fibre roof option that slashes around 4kg off the kerb weight.

The 2020 model revisions also extend to new standard 19-inch rims and three optional 20-inch alloys, with one set now available in a cool matte bronze effect.

Like before, the standard anchors get callipers painted black or red but the optional carbon-ceramic brake package includes callipers painted either blue, red or grey.

Inside, you'll find a refreshed 10.1-inch infotainment system that's no longer controlled by a rotary controller. In its place is the new MMI acoustic response tech that's claimed to be easier to use.

As part of the refresh there's also the option of a new Navigation Plus pack that introduces a sporty RS monitor displaying live data useful for track or fast road driving, including tyre pressures, acceleration and g-forces.

Under the bonnet the current car's 331kW/600Nm 2.9-litre turbocharged V6 carries over unchanged and it can still launch the coupe to 100km/h in just 3.9 seconds.

The updated RS 5 Sportback and Coupe will arrive shortly in Europe, but it's not yet known exactly when the facelifted models will be available in Australia, where small price rises could be expected.
