BMW Australia’s small car portfolio is soon to take on another spin-off: the 2 Series Gran Coupe.
Conceived as a rival to the Mercedes-Benz CLA and A-Class sedan, this swoopy four-door sedan will arrive in Australian showrooms in March available in two trim grades – 218i and M235i xDrive – that closely mirror the specification of the existing 1 Series hatch.
The BMW 218i anchors the line-up priced from $47,990 (plus on-road costs). Under the bonnet resides a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol three-cylinder good for 103kW and 220Nm. It drives the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
Standard equipment on the 218i comprises: 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, 10.25-inch multimedia system, ambient interior lighting, six-speaker sound system, wireless phone charger and LED exterior lighting. It is also fitted standard with an M Sport styling pack that brings an M Sport steering wheel, sports seats, 18-inch alloy wheels and other additions.
The 218i boasts standard safety equipment including a reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), rear cross-traffic alert and speed sign recognition.
Topping the new line-up, at least for now is the $69,990 (plus on-road costs) 2 Series M235i xDrive Gran Coupe.
It is a considerably sportier proposition, fitted with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four offering 225kW and 450Nm along with a trick all-wheel drive system. The all-important 0-100km/h time is pared back to 4.9 seconds, compared with 8.7 seconds for the 218i.
The added firepower is enhanced by more standard equipment, comprising larger 19-inch wheels, keyless entry, leather upholstery, electric seat adjustment, adaptive LED headlights, and a harman/kardon 16-speaker sound system. On the performance front there is also M Sport-fettled steering and brakes.
Dimensionally, the 2 Series Gran Coupe sits between the 1 Series and 3 Series, measuring 4526mm long, 1800mm wide and 1420mm wide. Boot capacity likewise straddles 1 and 3, at 430 litres, while the Gran Coupe differentiates itself from the 1 Series hatch with the installation of a 40:20:40 split-fold rear seat (in place of a 60:40 configuration).
The 2 Series Gran Coupe will officially go on sale in Australia on March 7. As expected, its pricing structure undercuts that of the Mercedes-Benz CLA, which begins at $60,700 for the CLA 200 and tops out at $85,500 for the AMG-fettled CLA 35.
