The price of admission for a V8-powered 5 Series has tumbled by nearly $100,000 with the introduction of the BMW M550i xDrive Pure Edition to Australia.
Priced from $134,900 plus on-road costs – well shy of the BMW M5 Competition’s $230K sticker value – the new M550i xDrive Pure is joined by a slightly more upscale M550i xDrive priced from $149,900 (plus on-road costs) from this month.
Both new models pack a familiar 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 that drives all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. All told, the bent-eight makes 390kW and 750Nm, bringing a nought to 100km/h time of 3.8 seconds – half a second slower than the all-conquering M5 Competition.
Fuel use is rated at 10.6L/100km on either model.
Starting with the Pure Edition ($134,900), standard performance equipment includes 20-inch M light alloy wheels, M Sport brakes, adaptive suspension, M aerodynamics package and an M Sport differential.
Inside, the M550i xDrive Pure sports wood trim highlight, digital instrument cluster, head-up display, sports seats, four-zone climate control, automatic tailgate, BMW Driving Assistant Plus package and a harman/kardon surround sound system.
The $15,000 pricing premium for the M550i xDrive buys an identical mechanical set-up, plus active anti-roll stabilisation, rear wheel steering and laser headlights.
On the specification front, the M550i xDrive also adds over the Pure: soft-close doors, leather trimmed instrument panel, sunroof and metallic paint as standard.
As ever, the optional packages are readily available, including the $1700 Innovations Package (BMW display key, remote control parking and gesture control) and the $7500 Indulgence Package (rear seat entertainment, massaging front seats and TV function).
The BMW M550i xDrive Pure and BMW M550i xDrive are on sale now.
