New Chevrolet Corvette C8 a sell-out success

Demand for first mid-engined -- and first global -- Corvette looks set to outstrip supply

The first year of supplies for the all-new 2020 Chevrolet Corvette is apparently already spoken for, confirming a strong initial order bank for the star-spangled supercar.

Barely a week after the C8 -- the first mid-engined and first global Corvette -- was revealed to the world and then confirmed for Australia by Holden, General Motors design chief Mike Simcoe revealed to

that opening orders have been strong.

“I think the orders have already hit the first year of production numbers,” said the former Holden design chief during the C8 Corvette's first public viewing at the Concours d’Elegance of America in Pebble Beach on Sunday.

“It’s nearly sold out" he told the US auto website. "It’s so close that it’s bound to be sold out soon.”

General Motors remains tight-lipped on the production numbers for the new Chevrolet Corvette, but previous generations have topped 30,000 annual sales.

Prospective buyers in the US can register their interest in the new supercar via an online registration process.

carsales.com.au understands the Corvette is timed to arrive in Australia showrooms late 2020 or early 2021, though no more details are known on price, specification or whether all Holden dealers will have access to the prized flagship.

The Australian release of the C8 Corvette presents a full circle moment of sorts, with the Corvette originally starting out life as a Holden Commodore Ute-based production mule.

US pricing for the 2020 Corvette starts at under $US60,000 and while that equates to $A85,000 in Australia, things like luxury car tax will see that price rise to well over $A100,000.

The 2020 Chevy Corvette Stringray is powered by a new mid-mounted 6.2-litrre LT2 V8 that makes maximum a 370kW or 495hp at around 6000rpm and 640Nm of torque (470lb-ft) at around 4600rpm.

The naturally-aspirated V8 drives the rear wheels through a clever new twin-clutch eight-speed automatic transmission. There’s also an electronically-controlled limited-slip differential.

The new Corvette is the first-ever production version in mid-engine configuration and the first to be produced in both left- and right-hand drive ex-factory.

It is also the fastest, most powerful entry-level Corvette, purportedly offering new standards of performance, technology and craftsmanship.
