Mitsubishi ASX upgraded again

This new-look 2020 Mitsubishi ASX will arrive in Australia from around September 2019.

Set to make its global premiere at the 2019 Geneva motor show early next month, the MY20 Mitsubishi ASX represents yet another facelift for a small SUV that's out-selling all others in its segment.

Despite being almost 10 years old – ancient in modern-day car evolutionary cycles – the Mitsubishi ASX was the top-selling small SUV in Australia in 2018 and the brand's third best-seller globally.

Making its world debut in Geneva alongside the Engelberg Tourer concept, the fresh-faced Mitsubishi ASX features new-look front and rear styling, bringing it in line with the slightly larger and less daggy Eclipse Cross SUV.

Mitsubishi says the new front-end design adopts the brand's 'dynamic shield' signature grille while adding a "robust and ingenious" aesthetic. We assume that means the integrated indicator and fog lights, surrounded by more colour-coded body work and bolder vertical lines.

The front-end features new LED lights and also 'skid plate styling' under the front bumper, which is meant to add a little more ruggedness to the design.

The 2020 Mitsubishi ASX gets new LED tail-lights while sharper rear-end styling "stretches across the width of the car and accentuates the wide stance", says Mitsubishi.

As well as the Red Diamond colour seen in the photos, Sunshine Orange and Oak Brown are added to the seven-colour paint palette currently available.

The interior gets one major upgrade – a larger touch-screen. The infotainment system screen grows from 7.0- to 8.0-inch and will retain its Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. It will also gain the ability to play videos via USB stick.

In Europe top-spec 2020 ASX also gets a Tom Tom navigation system with real-time traffic information.

Autonomous emergency braking (AEB) is not standard on all current ASX variants, but this could change with the MY20 model.

The Mitsubishi ASX was last updated in September 2018 and badged as model-year 2019 (MY19) and has been through several facelifts in current (third) generation, which was first introduced in Australia in July 2010 priced from just under $26K.

Currently priced from $23,490, the Mitsubishi ASX is pitched at small hatchback buyers, Last year it found 19,034 buyers to claim the top sales spot in the small SUV category, ahead of the Mazda CX-3 with 16,293 sales.

Mitsubishi Australia says the updated 2020 Mitsubishi ASX will arrive in Australia during the third quarter of this year, so by October 2019.
