The upcoming Volkswagen T-Cross will be priced from $27,990 plus on-road costs when it arrives in April.
Along with the slightly larger and better equipped T-Roc that will land Down Under at the same time, the all-new T-Cross will fill a considerable void in Volkswagen’s Australian SUV line-up – both in terms of size and price.
At under $28K, the newcomer slashes the price of entry to Volkswagen’s SUV stable considerably, undercutting the existing Tiguan 110TSI Trendline (from $34,150) by more than $6000. Crucially, it also gives Volkswagen a rival for city-SUVs including the Mazda CX-3, Mitsubishi ASX and Hyundai Kona, among many others.
The Volkswagen T-Cross will initially be available in two grades – 85TSI Life ($27,990) and 85TSI Style ($30,990).
Both variants are powered by an 85kW/200Nm 1.0-litre turbo-petrol three-cylinder engine that drives the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic transmission.
The entry-level 85TSI Life gets as standard: 16-inch alloy wheels, air-conditioning, wireless charging, four USB ports, 8.0-inch infotainment touch-screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, reversing camera, a leather-clad multi-function steering wheel, black roof rails, low pressure tyre indicator, automatic headlights and wipers and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.
On the safety front, standard equipment on the newcomer includes Front Assist with City Emergency Braking (low-speed AEB), pedestrian and cyclist monitoring, Lane Assist and Driver Fatigue Detection, and parking sensors with Manoeuvre Braking.
Higher up the food chain, the $30,990 T-Cross 85TSI life adds 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, carpet mats, chrome roof rails, park assist, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert and comfort sport front seats.
Volkswagen has confirmed a third T-Cross variant, the 110TSI Style fitted with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, will arrive in June. That model receives an uprated 110kW/250Nm turbo-petrol four-cylinder, larger 18-inch wheels, tinted windows, gloss-black door mirrors and unique cloth trim and dashboard display.
Pricing for the T-Cross 110TSI Style is not yet available.
“The T-Cross takes Volkswagen into new territory,” said Volkswagen marketing director Jason Bradshaw.
“Previously Japanese and Korean brands have had this segment to themselves. To say that none can touch the T-Cross for technology is no empty boast. Now, for the first time, there is an affordable German compact SUV, one that as the Tiguan and Touareg do in their respective segments, transcends the gulf between the mass market brands and those perceived as prestige.”
