2023 Cupra Formentor Matrix Edition now on sale

Special-edition Formentor VZx crossover is the first car from Cupra with Matrix LED headlights

Volkswagen Group Australia has bolstered its fledgling Spanish brand with the introduction of a special 2023 Cupra Formentor Matrix Edition – the first Cupra to be fitted here with Matrix LED headlights.

Based on the top-spec and top-selling Cupra Formentor VZx, the Matrix Edition is limited to 100 units and priced at $65,480 plus on-road costs ($70,490 drive-away), making it $1490 dearer than its donor car.

The advanced adaptive headlight technology is the headline act, however the special-edition mid-size coupe-style SUV also picks up a set of unique black and copper 19-inch wheels and heated black leather front seats with power adjustment and memory function for the driver.

Otherwise, the Matrix Edition’s standard equipment list mirrors the VZx, which includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, 12.0-inch infotainment system, wireless smartphone mirroring, wireless charging, three-zone climate control, nine-speaker Beats audio system, powered tailgate and a 360-degree camera, to name a few key items.

The only options available for the fully loaded Matrix Edition are a panoramic glass sunroof ($2100) and matte (Petrol Blue, Magnetic Tech) or premium (Graphene Grey) paint. The matte finish costs $2300, while the premium metallic adds $450.

The Formentor VZx is powered by a 228kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that drives all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Adaptive dampers help make the top-spec Formentor more compliant over rough roads and engaging through the bends.

Cupra Australia head of product planning Jeff Shafer said it was the VZx’s popularity which had spurred the emergence of another limited-edition Formentor, following on from the 30-unit Rojo Edition.

“We see the instant response to these editions, and the VZx in general, as a real endorsement of Cupra’s price and positioning,” he said.

“Cupra isn’t mainstream, we’re not trying to be premium – we’re uniquely focused on design and performance and our customers love that.”

The Formentor Matrix Edition is available to order now and due to arrive in the coming months.
