The 2023 Peugeot 508 GT Sportswagon Plug-In Hybrid has arrived Down Under priced from $82,915 plus on-road costs, making it the second most expensive model in Peugeot Australia’s local line-up behind the smaller 3008 GT Sport PHEV.
Motivated by the same 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol plug-in hybrid system as the corresponding fastback sedan, the sleek new five-door is good for a combined 165kW/360Nm outputs, which are delivered to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The system’s 81kW electric motor draws power from an 11.5kWh battery pack that yields a zero-emission cruising range of up to 55km and contributes heavily to the claimed 1.5L/100km combined fuel consumption.
No outright performance figures are provided for the flagship 508, even though it carries a 60Nm torque advantage over its internal combustion brethren.
Four drive modes – Electric, Hybrid, Sport and Comfort – are on offer to help drivers get the most from their vehicle in terms of both efficiency and performance, however, this and the rest of the standard equipment highlights are all included on the existing fastback.
What you really want to know is how much room the wagon body style offers and the numbers are a decent 530 litres with the rear seats in place and 1780L with them folded flat.
This compares with the fastback’s figures of 487L and 1537L respectively.
Peugeot Australia managing director Kate Gillis said 508 GT Sportswagon Plug-In Hybrid “offers an enriched driving experience with an array of smart technology working to enhance overall performance and efficiency”.
“As we build on our electrified offering in Australia across Passenger, SUV and LCV, the introduction of the 508 Sportswagon Plug-In Hybrid further demonstrates our commitment to offering choice for local customers considering a plug-in hybrid vehicle,” she said.
For anyone unfamiliar with the 508 GT PHEV’s standard equipment list, it’s headlined by adaptive dampers, a configurable 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless phone charging, a 10-inch infotainment system featuring sat-nav, smartphone mirroring, Bluetooth and voice recognition, adaptive cruise control, 10-speaker Focal sound system, dual-zone climate control, Nappa leather trim and eight-way power adjustable front seats.
Just two options are available for the wagon: a sunroof ($2500) and certain metallic or pearl paint colours ($690-$1050).
There’s still no update on when the sharper-looking 508 facelift will arrive in Australia, despite the French brand’s local division previously stating it would announce launch timing for the new model “in due course”.
