The order book is now open for the 2024 Audi SQ8 e-tron ahead of its Australian launch in the second quarter of next year, starting at $173,600 plus on-road costs.
The swoopy Sportback version commands a $7000 premium, priced from $180,600 plus ORCs.
Those asking prices are about $7500 upstream of the corresponding Audi e-tron S models the new SQ8 EVs replace, but the mark-ups are justified through the significantly increased driving range, faster charging capabilities and a raft of other smaller improvements.
Key to the extended range and faster charging is a new 114kWh battery pack and its more advanced chemistry, which now allows for 170kW DC fast-charging (up from 150kW) and provides an effective WLTP driving range of up to 494km for the SQ8 SUV and 515km for the sleeker Sportback.
Audi is claiming the SQ8 e-tron can be recharged from 10-80 per cent in just 31 minutes under optimal conditions, with the increased range also attributed to the new exterior design and reduced drag coefficient – now at 0.30Cd (SUV) and 0.27Cd (Sportback).
The big battery sustains the familiar array of electric motors, two of which reside on the rear axle with a single unit on the front and combine for unchanged system outputs of 370kW/973Nm.
Acceleration from 0-100km/h is completed in 4.5 seconds. Keep your foot into it and both SQ8 e-tron models will top out at 210km/h.
Managing the immense oomph is an advanced quattro all-wheel drive system, sticky Bridgestone Potenza tyres and adaptive air suspension as standard.
Other standard equipment includes 22-inch Audi Sport alloys, red high-performance braking package, a panoramic sunroof, Valcona leather upholstery, heated sport front seats, four-zone climate control, virtual cockpit, 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system, power-adjustable Audi Sport steering wheel, DAB+ digital radio, metallic paint and privacy glass.
Customers wanting even more from their luxury performance EV can opt for the Sensory Package (pricing TBC) that adds digital Matrix LED headlights, LED welcome lights, soft-close and latching doors, heated outer rear seats, rear sun shades, leather-upholstered dash and an air purification system.
Audi Australia said customers will also be able to opt for a 22kW AC charging package, with an additional second onboard charger (up to 22kW three-phase) and an Audi connect charger, up to 22kW AC three-phase.
