BMW has used the popular video game Fortnite to tease the upcoming 2024 BMW iX2, giving gamers the opportunity to customise the all-new compact electric fastback SUV with a range of wheels, paint finishes and boot contents.
Production-spec wheels, paint colours and interior options will be added to the mix on October 11, giving players (and the world) their best look yet at the looming battery-electric version of the BMW X2.
We’ve already seen the iX2’s bold front lighting signature and rakish coupe silhouette, but the fresh Fortnite teaser gives us our first glimpse at finer details of the model’s front-end, which appears to take inspiration from the BMW XM flagship SUV with its contrasting grille surround and trim.
Other key takeaways include a heavily sculpted front bumper, wide rear haunches and a raised hip line that helps accentuate that swoopy roofline, emphasising its coupe intentions.
No key details of the iX2’s mechanical make-up are included as part of the game or teaser, but previous communications from BMW nominated an effective cruising range of up to 449km – exactly 10km further than the traditionally-styled iX1 small electric SUV.
The powertrain will almost certainly be carried over from the iX1, which would mean outputs of 230kW/494Nm, a 64.7kWh lithium-ion battery and a 0-100km/h sprint time of about 5.6 seconds.
BMW said the development and launch of the world’s first car creator for Fortnite allows it to communicate with a younger audience as the automotive industry continues to become increasingly digitalised and electrified.
“The BMW Group has created a virtual city of the future with the island ‘Hypnopolis’, which can be explored by Fortnite’s players,” said the German car-maker.
“In a storyline centred around the new BMW iX2, it holds various challenges in store for gamers.
“The unique in-game experience allows players to design the new BMW iX2 according to their individual preferences.”
There’s been no official word on when the iX2 will make its public debut, but with registrations of interest and more revealing teasers on the horizon via Fortnite, we’re inclined to expect an unveiling within the next month or two.
