Chery has unveiled the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the large seven-seat SUV that’s a strong chance for the Australian market, the Chery Tiggo 9.
carsales understands there are no confirmed Australian plans for the 2024 Chery Tiggo 9 PHEV as yet, though there’s little doubt it would be a strong competitor for the Toyota Kluger Hybrid, Kia Sorento PHEV and upcoming Mazda CX-80 PHEV, with its claimed WLTC fuel range of more than 1400km.
The PHEV system is based around a 175kW/385Nm 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and a 165kW electric motor, however, battery capacity is yet to be confirmed, as is combined power and torque output.
Still, Chery claims the Tiggo 9 PHEV will return 5.2L/100km (WLTC) on the combined cycle, while its maximum claimed fuel range should cure range anxiety and usher in “a new era of green long-range travel”.
As with the smaller Chery Omoda 5 and its upcoming E5 battery-electric counterpart, the Tiggo 9 PHEV dons its own distinct design compared to its combustion-powered stablemate, with a much bigger and filled-in grille giving it a distinct Audi Q7 vibe in tandem with narrow headlights and busy 20-inch multi-spoke wheels.
The cabin is ruled by a vast 15.6-inch infotainment display and corresponding ‘integrated multifunctional console’, while the seats are “specially crafted” and “3D stitched”, says the Chinese brand.
Chery Australia has confirmed the petrol Tiggo 9 remains under study for our market.
