2024 Citroen C5 X Plug-in Hybrid coming

Electrified version of French crossover brings more power, efficiency and a much bigger purchase price

The local Citroen C5 X model line-up will be bolstered by the addition of a new range-topping plug-in hybrid version later this year.

Pricing for the 2024 Citroen C5 X Shine Plug-in Hybrid has been set at $73,990 plus on-road costs, positioning it $16,320 upstream of the existing turbo-petrol version (from $57,670 plus ORCs).

Citroen Australia has officially opened order books for the C5 X PHEV ahead of first customer deliveries in the last quarter of 2024.

Serving as the French brand’s first electrified model in Australia, the C5 X Plug-in Hybrid pairs a 133kW 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine and eight-speed automatic transmission with an 81kW electric motor for a combined system output of 165kW/360Nm.

A 12.4kWh battery pack sustains the motor and offers up to 60km of zero-emission driving, along with combined fuel consumption of just 1.4L/100km.

The battery can be recharged at up to 7.4kW via an AC wallbox or public charger, which is claimed to deliver a full charge from empty in three hours and 40 minutes, but no DC fast-charging capability has been published so far – not uncommon for a PHEV.

Drivers can switch between motive power via four drive modes – Electric, Hybrid, Comfort and Sport – that also alter the powertrain characteristics in terms of both performance and efficiency.

Standard equipment highlights will comprise a configurable 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster, 12-inch infotainment interface, sat-nav, wireless smartphone mirroring, eight-speaker sound system, leather upholstery, heated and power-adjustable front seats, panoramic glass sunroof and adaptive cruise control.

Headline safety gear, meantime, will include autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, multi collision braking, post-collision braking, emergency braking assistance, long range blind spot detection, lane departure warning, active lane following assist, advanced driver attention alert and rear cross traffic alert.

Citroen Australia managing director Kate Gillis said the brand was pleased to introduce its first electrified model and that it “champions Citroen’s design ethos by offering customers tranquil electric driving”.

As with the standard C5 X, the PHEV version is backed by a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty, five years of roadside assistance and a five-year capped priced service program.
