2024 GWM Haval Jolion Ultra sneaks in

New flagship petrol Jolion replaces the sporty S but scores the newer hybrid body

GWM Australia has bolstered its 2024 Haval Jolion line-up through the quiet introduction of an updated Ultra variant, pricing for which starts from $32,990 drive-away.

As of January 1, however, the new petrol flagship will increase to $33,990 drive-away, splitting the electrified Premium and Lux hybrids on price but bettering them both in terms of standard equipment and sex appeal.

Despite running on the same 91 octane dinosaur juice as the other petrol variants, the facelifted Ultra shares little in common with its internal combustion peers in that it wears the same curvaceous body as the hybrids and features a completely different engine.

Whereas the standard 1.5-litre turbo-petrol outputs 105kW/210Nm, the Ultra’s mill – which has a longer stroke and higher compression ratio – huffs out a much stronger 130kW/270Nm as per the superseded Jolion S, which just so happened to don a bunch of black exterior design cues.

The Ultra’s punchier mill also uses less fuel than the Premium or Lux petrols (7.5L/100km vs 8.1L/100km) on the combined cycle and pairs its extra grunt with a more sophisticated multi-link rear suspension set-up, all but confirming it as the facelifted S replacement.

All petrol Jolions drive the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Standard equipment highlights on the new Ultra include black 18-inch alloys, dual-zone climate control, multi-colour ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, faux leather upholstery, a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster, heated, cooled and power-adjustable front seats, a 12.3-inch infotainment system, wireless charging pad, head-up display, smartphone mirroring and a six-speaker sound system.

Launch control is also weirdly included, as is auto-parking assist.

All of the Jolion range’s usual active safety and driver aids are present on the Ultra, the main ones being autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, front and rear collision warning and traffic sign recognition.

Premium Hybrid – $32,990
