The current 2024 Honda Civic Type R FL5 sets the benchmark in the hot hatch world and now Honda racing/tuning hot shop Mugen has just made it even rowdier.
Two track-ready, road-legal variants have been revealed ahead of their public debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon on January 12, dubbed the Civic Type R Group A and Group B and boasting a range of aerodynamic tweaks and hardware upgrades.
A full range of go-faster parts has been developed by Mugen for the already potent Type R, including new suspension dampers, hardier brake discs and pads along with stainless-steel and titanium exhaust pipes.
The new exhaust system should fix one of the few criticisms to be levelled at the FL5 Honda CTR – its lack of acoustic involvement – and is also expected to improve performance, potentially raising the engine’s 235kW power output.
All the performance parts will be available via Mugen in Japan but pricing won’t be announced until the Tokyo Auto Salon kicks off.
Mugen has also created several body kit enhancements that are claimed to deliver aerodynamic improvements.
The Honda Civic Type R Group A also comes with a new front splitter, side skirts and a reprofiled rear wing.
The more extreme Group B model gets a carbon-fibre bonnet with more vents than an air-conditioner factory, complete with front wheel-arch ducts that should aid braking thermal dynamics.
Heavy-duty side skirts and a bold rear wing finish the Type R’s exterior upgrades while the interior gets a few enhancements too, including a new Mugen steering wheel and gear shift knob, body-hugging bucket seats and splashes of carbon-fibre.
Both models ride on new 19-inch alloy wheels from BBS.
Very few Mugen vehicles have made their way to Australia through official channels, but in Japan there are several, including the Honda S660 Mugen we drove back in 2015.
